COP29 Organizing Committee convenes eighth meeting

The Organizing Committee held its 8th meeting in preparation for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Samir Nuriyev, Head of the Presidential Administration and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, noted that with only days left until COP29, preparations have accelerated under the directives of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, nearing completion. He mentioned that on October 17, President Ilham Aliyev reviewed the extensive work underway at the Baku Olympic Stadium.

As a clear example of international respect for Azerbaijan and President Ilham Aliyev, Nuriyev highlighted that over 100 heads of state and government, vice presidents, and other senior officials are expected to attend the COP29 World Leaders' Summit. Additionally, more than 50,000 participants have registered via the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat, with numbers expected to rise.

Nuriyev further recalled President Ilham Aliyev’s address at the Pre-COP29 event held on October 10-11, emphasizing the importance of reaching a new climate finance target. He expressed confidence that achieving a "Baku Agreement" would stand as a collective success for the international community.

The Head of the Presidential Administration stressed the importance of the Transport Plan developed to ensure seamless transportation during COP29 in Baku.

The committee reviewed ongoing preparations, including the Baku Olympic Stadium updates, events in coordination with state agencies and international partners, and noted the significant interest from foreign media and NGOs.

Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources and COP29 President-Designate, updated on COP29's overall progress, including the recent annual sessions of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group and the ongoing meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Colombia.

Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, spoke on media communication efforts and the contributions of civil society to COP29.

Anar Alakbarov, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, highlighted logistical efforts at the Baku Olympic Stadium, traffic management, and other preparations.

Jeyhun Bayramov, Foreign Minister, discussed important documents to be adopted during COP29, particularly those related to the new climate finance target.

Parviz Shahbazov, Minister of Energy, detailed advancements in Azerbaijan's green energy sector and the events planned by the Ministry for COP29.

Nigar Arpadarai, MP and UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29, shared insights into the Baku Climate Action Week and other related events.

Vusal Huseynov, Chief of the State Migration Service, outlined migration management efforts for COP29.

Ilgar Musayev, Head of the State Service of Special Communication and Information Security, discussed measures to ensure information security.

Leyla Hasanova, COP29 Youth Climate Champion, emphasized youth involvement in climate action.

A video was screened showcasing updates on the Baku Olympic Stadium.

At the conclusion, Chairman Nuriyev expressed confidence that under President Ilham Aliyev’s leadership, Azerbaijan would achieve historic success at COP29, issuing further instructions for implementing the COP29 Action Plan.
