Today, Azerbaijan celebrates Wind Tuesday, or Yel Charshanbasi, which falls on the third Tuesday before the Novruz Holiday.

 

The warm winds blowing on Wind Tuesday signal the arrival of spring.

According to tradition, the awakening wind travels around the world on this Tuesday, stirring the water and fire, and giving everything new life. This is why it is commonly referred to as "Windy Tuesday."

On Wind Tuesday, people light bonfires in their yards and neighborhoods at dusk. Those gathered around the fire take turns jumping over it three times, with the intention of being rid of illness, misfortune, disasters, and sins.

Wind Tuesday is also a time for preparations for the last Tuesday before Novruz, with houses and yards being cleaned and sweets baked.

In Azerbaijani mythology, the wind is believed to serve as a guide, showing the way forward.
